Nicholas - "Without You"

EP:
Super Sound Single Volume 2

Label:
Dikso Records

Style:
House, Funk, Disco

Awesome release!
All four tracks are effective on the dancefloor, but I tend towards the b-side. B1 is a great loose house rhythm with old-school bass and synth motifs, while B2 uses one of my favourite ever basslines from Womack & Womack's Baby I'm Scared Of You.
All in all, a VFM release for the slow'n'fat posse.

EDIT: OK, the A1 track, Without You, is really growing on me too, now. A wonderful Garfield Fleming vocal loop and then when the strings come in... lift off!

Glowing Glisses - On The Bridge (Larry Heard Dub)

Larry Heard (born 1960) is a musician widely known for the Chicago house music he produced in the mid-1980s and continues to produce today. He was a member of the influential group Fingers, Inc. and has recorded solo under various names, most notably Mr. Fingers.

His smooth production style with soulful vocals and long instrumental passages that de-emphasized percussion spearheaded the subgenre known as deep house. One of his first releases was a collaboration with singer Robert Owens, released under the group name "Fingers Inc." The song "Mystery of Love" instantly became a classic hit, rising to #10 on the Billboard Dance charts.

Although he has created much music and his career is ongoing, his mid-1980s tracks are considered classics in the house and nu-soul genres.

He has mentored other successful artists, most notably Son Dexter, whose label Alleviated Records has released some of Heard's music.

Much of Heard's music is released and re-released under different names, including Fingers, Inc., Mr. Fingers, Loosefingers, Larry Heard, and Robert Owens (the vocalist on those tracks).

His musical influences range from Jazz to Dub Reggae which culmulates in his hypnotic production style.

House Of House - Rushing To Paradise ( Dj Harvey Streets Edit )

Saheer Umar and Liv Spencer (also of DFA's Still Going) have only ma-
de one single as House Of House, but they made it one worth rememberi-
ng: 2009's multi-part piano-and-vocal-house epic,"Rushing To Paradise".
The unenviable task of remixing its rapturous, near-perfect twelve mi-
nutes for a 2010 re-release on Pete Tong's White Label fell to a worthy
candidate–legendary, maniacal disco and house selector DJ Harvey. Har-
vey's version cools things out a bit, latching onto a circular groove
and swapping the piano for decaying sheets of modular synth. It hits all
the same pressure points, just in a mildly different way.

"Rushing To Paradise" is on a Pete Tong's White Label.

Raised in Southern Ontario somewhere between Detroit and Montreal, Eddie C began his experiments in music some time in the late 80s. Inspired first by Hip Hop and the burgeoning Acid House scene, he began making tape edits of late night radio and shortly thereafter began visiting record shops and warehouse parties to discover the music first hand. Record collecting has since been a way of life for the man, followed closely by an opposing passion for skiing which lead him to his current abode in the Rocky Mountains. With plenty of time over the past decade for reflection and research in his log cabin studio, C has found a re-entry into the underground with his raw yet sophisticated approach to both production and DJing.

At that time, he continued to develop his own style, a combination of deep house and

FCL - Let's Go

Label:
We Play House Recordings

Co-producer - Red D
Vocals - Lady Linn
Written-By, Producer - San Soda

Review:

Young San Soda hit his stride in 2009 via his releases for We Play House Recordings, the boutique label started by Belgian House veteran DJ Red D primarily to release the producer's work. Taking their cooperation a step further, Vocals for Everyone marks the duo's first collaborative release under the FCL moniker, a project they're intending will recall "a time when vocals were not something just for girls and gays."

Vocals for Everyone does precisely what it says on the tin, reimagining archetypal '90s vocal house while retaining the label's characteristic deepness along the way. A San Soda solo venture, "Let's Go" is a slick take on gospel house featuring a trim four-note organ progression, handclaps and tempered vocals from USG, all maintaining an orderly balance, with a bridge of violins and flashes of a pealing, bell-like melody. "More Than Seven" has Red D taking up both the co-production reins and lyrical credits, for thudding kicks, key stabs and Lady Linn's sultry "I wanna see your body work / I wanna see your body moving" vocals, all of which recall an unmistakable Chicago vibe.

Despite recent playlists and charts tending to favour one or the other of these two watertight classic-sounding tracks, the even scorecard is unbalanced by San Soda's resourcefulness on "Let's Go Seven." Taking a little from column A and a little from B, he marries "Let's Go" and "More Than Seven" for a near-perfect slice of modern vocal house. The beat from the former is pared down to the kick-bass-clap essentials, while the chiming bell sounds forms its distinctive melody. Lady Linn's vocals of the latter are scrambled, "I wanna see your body moving" becoming the core directive. This is a really solid EP of referential sounds, with bonus points for San Soda's goal-scoring mash-up.

Hot Toddy feat Ron Basejam - I Need Love

Label: Eskimo Recordings

"I Need Love" is quite possibly the most clichéd song name you could come up with. Hot Toddy, though, comes up with the goods here—in conjunction with Ron Basejam—to create a track that has histrionics enough to fulfill the promise its title suggests. "I Need Love" moves deliciously slow on purpose, luring you in to its sub-100 BPM charm. It allows you to luxuriate in each kick, hearing the imaginary drummer trying their best not to rush things. It's a deep pocket, but it gives room for Basejam's mantra—"you could be mine always"—to take on the sort of weight that it deserves before the piano, synths and strings amp things up to almost unbearable levels.

Morgan Geist has never been a man of such grandiose gestures, and he doesn't disappoint here, providing a lovely and restrained version of "I Need Love," which almost completely disregards the vocals altogether. He doesn't need them, though: His expert arrangement speaks more than Basejam ever could. Geist moves just as slowly, but here it's things like horns, kick drums and guitar lines that take on import. After a slightly disappointing remix of Catholic earlier this year, it's an assured return to form.

Ron Basejam:

Real Name: James Baron Profile: James Baron began DJing in Colwyn Bay bars and clubs about 10 years ago.
