ESG Moody

An art-funk ensemble from the South Bronx, ESG (Emerald Sapphire & Gold) was formed by sisters Renee, Valerie, and Marie Scroggins, all of whom handle vocals and percussion, and friends David Miles (guitar) and Leroy Glover (bass). ESG's music is centered around the sisters' complex polyrhythms with atmosphere supplied by bass and pop-flavored guitar. During their first incarnation, the group signed with 99 Records and issued a debut self-titled EP in 1981 that featured three live and three studio songs, the latter produced by the legendary Martin Hannett (Joy Division, etc.). 1982's ESG Says Dance to the Beat of Moody EP continued in a similar vein, as did their first full-length album, 1983's Come Away With ESG. ESG disbanded shortly thereafter, but unexpectedly re-formed in the early '90s, heralding their comeback with a self-titled 1991 compilation of previously released material. The group's work had become popular among hip-hop artists searching for samples, with such acts as TLC, the Wu-Tang Clan, the Beastie Boys, Big Daddy Kane, and indie rockers Unrest all making use of ESG beats; the group addressed this issue on the 1992 12" EP Sample Credits Don't Pay Our Bills. ESG Live! appeared in 1995, featuring both old and new material. The group continued to record during the late '90s, and even added Scroggins' daughters Chistelle and Nicole.

Jovonn - Pianos Of Gold (1993)

True lovers of Dance music have been familiar with the name JoVonn for some time now. He has excelled in every role he has played in the Dance music industry for over a decade. These roles have included singer, song writer, musician and record label owner. In 1991, the Dance scene was rocked by "Turn and Runaway" on Warner Bros. Records, which was JoVonn's second release. This classic hit, achieved the honor of charting at number 10 on Billboard. JoVonn's discography incudes such hits as "Love So Special" by Ceybil Jeffries, on which he also sang background vocals; "Step Into My Life" by Valerie Johnson; "Flutes", "Be Free" and countless others. In addition to being an internationally renowned producer and club DJ, JoVonn founded his first Dance label, Goldtone Records, in the early 1990's. His latest record label ventures, Next Moov Records and Next Moov Traxx, are dedicated to bringing back the deep, soulful sounds of the Underground.
To JoVonn, Dance music is more than just another genre. It is a feeling, an emotion, a passion. He compares the feelings it conveys to that of Gospel saying, "it's spiritual". His mission is to capture that deep, soulful Underground sound of the past, take it to another level and into the new millennium.

Lafayette Afro Rock Band - Hihache

Though little known in their native U.S., the Parisian-based Lafayette Afro Rock Band was among the premier funk outfits of the 1970s, later becoming a seemingly endless source of samples and breaks for artists from Public Enemy to Janet Jackson. The group was formed on Long Island, NY as the Bobby Boy Congress; deciding America was already overloaded with funk acts, they relocated to France in 1971, but when frontman Bobby Boy returned stateside, the remaining members -- guitarist Larry Jones, bassist Lafayette Hudson, keyboardist Frank Abel, horn players Ronnie James Buttacavoli and Arthur Young, drummer Ernest "Donny" Donable, and percussionists Keno Speller and Arthur Young -- renamed themselves Ice and became the house session band at producer Pierre Jaubert's Parisound studio. Regularly performing live in Paris' Barbesse district -- an area made up primarily of African immigrants -- Ice's driving funk became increasingly influenced by African rhythms and textures, and in the wake of their 1973 debut LP Each Man Makes His Own Destiny, Jaubert changed the group's name to the Lafayette Afro Rock Band.

Nina Simone - Here Comes the Sun

Nina Simone's version of the George Harrison classic Here Comes The Sun

Lyrics:

Here comes the sun little darlin'.
Here comes the sun an' I say,
it's alright.
It's alright.

Here comes the sun little darlin'.
Here comes the sun I say,
It's alright.
It's alright.

Little darlin' it's been a long cold and lonely winter.
Little darlin' it feels like years since you've been here.
Here comes the sun little darlin'.
Here comes the sun, I say,
It's alright.
It's alright.

Little darlin' the smiles are returning to the faces now.
Little darlin' it seems like years since you've been here.
Little darlin' it's been a long cold lonely winter.
Little darlin' it feels like years since you've been here.

(Here comes the sun)
Here comes the sun,
aren't you glad to see it.
I say yeah it's alright.

Here comes the sun little darlin',
I say it's alright little darlin'.

Here comes the sun.
Here comes the sun.
I say little darlin',
it seems like years since you've been here little darlin'.
Here comes the sun, babe it's alright now.
You can come on out now, it's alright now.
You can come on out now, it's alright now.

Womack & Womack - Teardrops

Music video by Womack & Womack performing Teardrops. (C) 1988 The Island Def Jam Music Group

Biography:

Many Soul music fans believe that, when tracing back the roots of modern Soul, all roads ran through Sam Cooke. Well, that is literally true in the case of the singing/songwriting duo Womack & Womack. Cecil Womack is one of the famous Womack brothers (the most notable being Bobby Womack) and was a member of the Valentinos, the sibling singing group that was mentored by Sam Cooke before his tragic death. Linda Womack is Sam Cooke's daughter (and was for a time Bobby's stepdaughter) and became Cecil's wife and musical partner.

Womack & Womack established a stellar reputation as songwriters of melodic, intelligent songs that were recorded by others especially during the period 1975 - 1990. Perhaps most notable of their songs were "Love TKO," originally recorded by Teddy Pendergrass and recently remade by Hall & Oates, Patti LaBelle's "Love Bankrupt" and the wonderful ballad "New Day," immortalized by George Benson.

Cecil and Linda also had a relatively short but notable recording career. Their 1983 debut album, Love Wars, was a critical favorite, and spun off the minor hit "Baby I'm Scared of You." It was a great album front-to-back, and included their own version of "TKO" as well as the smooth "Good Times." They followed over the next half decade with the solid but less commercially successful Radio M.U.S.I.C. Man, Conscience and Starbright before moving to RCA in 1991 for Family Spirit. Their 1993 recording Transformed Into The House Of Zekkariyas was their last as Womack and Womack.

Cecil and Linda moved to Africa in the 90s. They are now recording with their seven children as The House of Zekkariyas, and released the album Sub Conscience in 2002.

In 2004, Australia's Raven Records released Strange and Funny: The Best of Womack & Womack 1984-93.

Lytrics:

Whenever I hear goodbyes, remind me baby of you
I break down and cry, next time I'll be true, yeah
Fever for lost romance remind me baby of you
I took a crazy chance
Next time I'll be true, I'll be true, I'll be true
Footsteps on the dance floor remind me baby of you
Teardrops in my eyes, next time I'll be true, yeah
Whispers in the powder room
"She cries on every tune, every tune, every tune"

When I'm dancin' 'round, remind me baby of you
I really let you down, next time I'll be true, yeah
I took a crazy chance
"She cries on every tune, every tune, every tune"

Footsteps on the dance floor remind me baby of you
Teardrops in my eyes, next time I'll be true, yeah
Whispers in the powder room
"She cries on every tune, every tune, every tune"

And the music don't feel like it did when I felt it with you
Nothing that I do or feel ever feels like I felt it with you

Hurting deep inside, she cries on every tune
I break down and cry
"She cries on every tune, every tune, every tune"

Footsteps on the dance floor remind me baby of you
Teardrops in my eyes, next time I'll be true, yeah
Whispers in the powder room
"She cries on every tune, every tune, every tune"

Swayzak - Then there's her

Brown and Taylor formed back in 1993 and in those post-iron curtain times took much inspiration from the dark and cold eastern block. The Swayzak name came later as much inspired by Eastern Europe as it was Hollywood . . . this is indicative of the juxtaposition of Swayzak.

Before Googling and the Myspace Generation, information was spread by mouth and paper, reputations built on musical prowess and friendships. Swayzak used the technology of the times; fax, pagers, photocopiers and answering machines to spread the word. But it was only in 1997 by releasing their first vinyl “bueno/fukumachi” (a record of deep dubby minimal house inspired as much by manga as a trip to Spain) to much hulabaloo of the few who had picked up on their sound. Luckily this was enough to inspire the young chaps to make more records on their self funded label. A call from a legend also had its part, Laurent Garnier’s“ beautiful and moody” answering machine comment gave them much confidence in their sound.

As things moved forward via strange twists they found themselves in 1998 releasing a debut album “Snowboarding in Argentina“ to much crtical acclaim. An album with one misguided aim to fund a snowboarding holiday! one that hasn’t quite been achieved though Argentina has been gigged several times. However it did put them on the road to bigger things, playing everywhere from Chile to Japan and quite a few place in between. Giant Festivals and miniscule clubs and bars, museums, fashion shows, Spanish cathedrals, and even a week long party in a Montreal loft. Regulars at Fabric in London and Watergate of Berlin: two of the world's finest clubs - Swayzak keep filling floors.

One of the first artists to be released on Richie Hawtin's Minus label with their Theorem collaborations and having released four albums on K7, the legendary compilations of Groovetechnology and Fabric 11 crossing the paths between minimalism, deep house, electro and pure pop. Swayzak have released and remixed for : K7, Minus, Pokerflat, Playhouse, Klang, Simple, Logisitc, Force Trax, Mille Plateaux and even Sony .Their songs have featured on several commericals, tv shows, and hundereds of compilations.

Their live shows are exactly that, never rehearsed and 100% improvised taking a journey like jazz did in the past. In these days of audio perfection Swayzak enjoy to be different, not quite playing the game as it should be played. Whilst embracing technology using unsynced laptops and outboard effects to create a dub inspired sound often much heavier than their studio works. They often play as a pair or with live vocals from collaborator Richard Davis and percussion from Francesco Brini..

2009 sees the re-release of Snowboarding in Argentina, Swayzak's oh so innocent seminal album inspired by the Berlin/Detriot/ Chigaco/ New York music of the early 90’s .Originally released to critical acclaim in 1998 , this album originated in two forms ,one for the US market and one for the UK. However it was in Germany that Swayzak found themselves week after week, somehow stumbling upon a scene that was soon to be embraced by the world. Starting in june 2009 Swayzak will present their T bar London monthly night “Serieculture” an intentional unconventional residency.

Allen Spion - Fallen For Her

Producing since 2006, Allen Spion is constantly morphing his sound without forgetting his roots. Although Detroit techno of the nineties is what dragged him into electronic music, Allen said that he was born at the wrong time while alluding to the music of the eighties which, for him, can hardly find a replacement these days.
Maybe it is this unexperienced phase in his musical life what is very much drawn to his production today.

He doesnt like for his style to be labeled, altough its mainly variations of deep, tech & melodic music.

Has released several EPs on acclaimed labels and a number of remixes as it likes to remix every original in a completely different light.

In parallel with the production, he is also performing as a live P.A.

From 2011 he started a new project called "Disrupted Project",trying to present his views on dub, detroit tech house forms.

Also with 2011 he started a podcast series called "Waveforms" wich is mainly oriented on deep/dub/dark/detroit techno variations. Waveforms soon gained respect and a large mass of followers all over the world. Feel free to check it out!

Commodores - Lady (You Bring Me Up)

The Commodores is an American funk/soul band of the 1970s and 1980s. The members of the group met as mostly freshmen at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in 1968, and signed with Motown in November 1972, having first caught the public eye opening for The Jackson 5 while on tour. The Commodores have sold over 75 million records worldwide.

This group is best known for their ballads, such as "Easy" and "Three Times a Lady", but, for the most part, the group mainly recorded funky, driven dance-floor hits which include "Brick House", "The Bump", "Fancy Dancer", and "Too Hot ta Trot". The Commodores originally called themselves the Mystics, but wanted to change the name. To choose a new name William King opened a dictionary and randomly picked a word. "We lucked out," he remarked with a laugh when telling this story to People (magazine). "We almost became The Commodes!"
"Machine Gun", the instrumental title track from the band's debut album, became a staple at American sporting events, and is similarly featured in many films, including Boogie Nights and Looking for Mr. Goodbar. It reached #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975. Another instrumental, "Cebu" (named after an island in the Philippines), later became a staple in the Quiet storm format. Three albums released in years 1975 and 1976 (Caught in the Act, Movin' On, Hot On The Tracks) are considered the peak of their harder funk period. Only one such hit from that era scored big, the funk-driven "Brick House" which reached #5 in the U.S. After those recordings the group started to move towards softer sound. That move was hinted from their 1976 Top Ten hits "Sweet Love" and "Just to Be Close to You." In 1977 the Commodores scored a ballad hit with "Easy", which became the group's biggest hit yet, reaching #4 in the U.S. After years of toiling in the Top Ten, the group finally reached #1 in 1978 with the sweet "Three Times a Lady." The year 1979 saw the Commodores score another Top Five ballad hit "Sail On" before reaching the top of the charts once again with another ballad, "Still." The group had no major hits in 1980, but by 1981 they were back with a vengeance, scoring Top Ten hits with the ballad "Oh No" (#4 U.S.) and their first upbeat single in almost five years, "Lady (You Bring Me Up)" (#8 U.S.).

Examine - Evo District

After having done a bunch of well received single releases, 'Major Minor' is Examine's debut album on the infamous Manual Music label.

"Creativity is useless if it's no fun"; a simple thought that keeps young Zagreb based producer Examine floating on machines, waveforms and virtual instruments for years now. Focused on dancefloor music consumers as much as home listeners, his sound is marked by the words "deep" "tech" "dub" "danceable" and is lead only by his raw feeling of determining good.

His career as a composer didn't start so long ago, it took years for his sound to evolve to the point where no boundaries are set and no stereotypes are followed, the only thing that matters is how the music sounds and what message it bring across to it's consumers.

"Regardless of the club experience as a clubber/dj or some other non-music thing, there is always a part of that specific moment during which your heart stops for a moment, eyes closed, brain frozen, taking your mind taking a snapshot for day after or even a lifetime. I want to recreate these moments in my unique way, want to expeience that feeling again. That's my music."

Black Ivory - What Goes Around (Comes Around)

Black Ivory was a R&B group from Harlem, which had a number of hits in the 1970s, including "Don't Turn Around", "You and I" (both of which featured Larry Blackmon from Cameo on drums), "I'll Find a Way (The Loneliest Man in Town)", "Spinning Around", "What Goes Around (Comes Around)", "Will We Ever Come Together", and "Mainline."

The group features songwriter and prolific disco producer Leroy Burgess, Stuart Bascombe, and Russell Patterson. They were managed by Patrick Adams, an executive at the Today/Perception record company. Burgess was the lead voice of the majority of their hits in the early '70s. With Today/Perception being a small label, the promotion of Black Ivory's singles scarcely got beyond the East Coast. This lack of exposure, coupled with the rise of disco and the fact Adams was beginning to branch out into other projects, caused Black Ivory to lose steam.

Kleeer - Groove With You

Kleeer was an American New York based funk, disco and post-disco band which was formed in 1972 under the name The Jam Band, as a backup group to different disco bands and vocalists. The group consisted of Woody Cunningham, vocalist/percussionist Paul Crutchfield, guitarist Richard Lee and bassist Norman Durham.

After a switch to the name Pipeline in 1975, the group also decided to switch to making hard rock instead of disco. Record labels competed to sign them but, when they finally ended up at Columbia Records, their single "Gypsie Rider" did not fare well commercially.
In 1976 they got the opportunity to become The Universal Robot Band along with underground disco producers Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael. This project was more successful than their former projects. They made the single "Barely Breaking Even" alongside singer Leroy Burgess, and they also recorded an album. The group toured as The Universal Robot Band until 1978.

After 1978, the band decided to make all their music themselves under the new name of Kleeer.

Between 1979 and 1985 the group released seven albums and had several hits in the US Billboard Hot 100 and in R&B charts. The most mentionable are "Tonight's the Night", "Winners", "Intimate Connection", and "Get Tough." The sound was now more focused on 1980s style funk, and electronic instruments, like vocoders and synthesizers.
After the 1985's album Seeekret, the band disappeared for unknown reasons. Most of the musicians continued working with other projects. In the 1990s, however, the group re-formed as Kleeer at some occasions.

The group's influence today is best found in many hip hop songs, where DJs have frequently sampled Kleeer, for example by 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, DJ Quik, Lil Jon and The Eastside Boys. "Keeep Your Body Workin", which reached number 54 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart in 1979, was "reworked" into an updated recording by Tony Moran featuring Martha Wash, under the title "Keep Your Body Working." The Moran/Wash version reached number one on the Hot Dance Club Play chart in December 2007.
Woody Cunningham died on January 9, 2010.

Cottam 1 - Side B

Cottam has been spinning other peoples records from the age of 14 - after ‘borrowing’ his brothers 80s soul and early hip hop he discovered house music and was hooked. Clubbing in the north through his teens, as acid became rave became progressive DJs like Dave Clarke introduced him to harder techno and electro, a love that still lasts to this day with DJs like surgeon and the black country crew introducing dubstep into their sets. After so long loving the music and tinkering with his own ideas, 2009 saw his first house experiments emerge, often re-working soul and hip hop tracks. The first limited edition COTTAM 12” was released in September 2009 to a rapturous reception gaining record of the week status at Phonica, Rub-a-Dub and Piccadilly in the UK
