Floating Points - Myrtle Avenue

Putting some organic funk back into dubstep and techno as if he were the child of Luke Vibert and Flying Lotus, London’s Sam Shepherd is better known to dancefloors and tasteful U.K. radio programs as Floating Points. Shepherd launched the project in 2008 by releasing some white-label 12”s plus a bootleg remix of avant jazz legend Sun Ra’s “I’ll Wait for You.” Gilles Peterson picked up on both and featured the two tracks on his Worldwide radio program. Even though he spent his days finishing his Ph.D. in neuroscience, Shepherd still found time in 2009 to partner with Rinse FM’s leftfield DJ Alexander Nut and form the Eglo label. Floating Points’ “For You” single came out on the label that same year, as did Vacuum, an EP named after his parent’s Hoover, which Shepherd had sampled for the A-side. A guest mix on Mary Anne Hobbs’ radio program also aired in 2009, and Floating Points would make an appearance on the BBC DJ’s Wild Angels compilation. Shepherd kicked off 2010 by playing London’s Fabric nightclub alongside Four Tet and James Holden.

Joe Stawarz - Bee Bear

Joe Stawarz - Bee Bear (Soma325d)

1. Bee Bear
2. Deep Cut
3. Deep Cut (Mihalis Safras Remix)

All the way from Western Australia, the young Joe Stawarz combines beautiful compositions with slick production making for a truly unique trademark sound. After getting Soma’s attention with his competition winning remix of Slam’s “We’re Not Here”, Joe released his debut EP ‘Cry’ with the label. Now he returns with Bee Bear, an EP that more than lives up to the expectation of such a talented young producer.

The EP is full of deep and delicate arrangements that demonstrate both Joe’s scholar ability as a composer and his master craftsmanship as an up and coming producer. The tracks indulge in their own musicality rather than conforming to the format of standard club tracks of the moment.

Bee Bear is in a world of it’s own. Another expertly crafted sequence of glimmering clicks and rolling snares while cleverly arranged horns give the track a unique sounding melancholy that lingers on the brain.

Deep Cut is a powerful yet composed track that patiently reveals itself over time. Finely tuned clicks set with clinical precision create a minimal atmosphere while deep sweeping synths build the track until it suddenly kicks into life with gripping tech house. The track then levels into a pensive reprise of sweeping syncopation concluding what is an epic track.

Mihalis Safras brings Deep Cut to the surface with a tech house remix that gives it a dance-floor edge. Whilst adding his own distinctive rhythmic sound, Safras pushes the melodies of the original further, creating a powerful groove that will satisfy basements and big rooms alike.

Minnie Riperton- Inside My Love

Minnie Julia Riperton (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979) was an American singer-songwriter best known for her 1975 single "Lovin' You". She was married to songwriter and music producer Richard Rudolph from 1972 until her death in the summer of 1979. They had two children - music engineer Marc Rudolph and actress/comedienne Maya Rudolph.

Riperton's first professional singing engagement was with The Gems, when she was fifteen. Raynard Miner, a blind pianist, heard Riperton singing during her stint with Hyde Park's A Capella Choir and became her musical patron. The Gems had relatively limited commercial success, but proved to be a good outlet for Riperton's talent. Eventually the group became a session group known as Studio Three and it was during this period that they provided the backing vocals on the classic 1965 Fontella Bass hit "Rescue Me".

In 1964 the Gems released a local hit, I Can't Help Myself, and their last single, He Makes Me Feel So Good, was released in 1965. After that, the group released records under numerous names—most notably 1966's Baby I Want You by the Girls Three and 1967's My Baby's Real by the Starlets. The latter has achieved cult status with northern soul fans and remains a favorite. It also was a Motown-style song reminiscent of Tammi Terrell. In 1968 Watered Down was released as a follow-up, under the name The Starlets. It was the last release of Riperton's former girl group.

The song was first performed by Bing Crosby for the 1942 film Holiday Inn. While it is often regarded as a Christmas song, in the movie it is performed on New Year's Eve, and expresses a wish for the listener to enjoy "happy holidays" throughout the entire year. The song has been recorded by numerous artists over the years, including Perry Como, Percy Faith, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Jackie Gleason, Peggy Lee, Barry Manilow (in a medley with "White Christmas"), Jo Stafford, and Andy Williams (in a medley with Kay Thompson's composition "The Holiday Season").

Ron Trent - Prescription Manifesto

Ronald "Ron" Trent (born May 23, 1973) is an American house music DJ and record producer.

After experimenting with beat machines and a small keyboard in 1986, he began recording the track "Altered States" while still in high school. He released it on Armando's Warehouse Records in 1990. The track became a club hit among devotees of techno, despite Trent's grounding in the Chicago house scene. He then began working with Detroit producers such as Chez Damier, with whom he issued several singles before co-founding the label Prescription Records in 1993. They also worked with Berlin-based producer Maurizio.
Later in the 1990s, he moved to Brooklyn and put together a collaboration known as Urban Sound Gallery, or USG. He also worked with Anthony Nicholson there. He returned to Chicago in the 2000s.

Todd Terje - Snooze 4 Love

Training to become a pianist Terje enrolled at a local music school, but to his disappointment there wasn’t much jazz being taught there. Gradually leaving the musical career path, he later moved on to studying physics at the University of Oslo. Although not longer aspiring to become a pianist, he was by no means over music. In 2001 Terje got in touch with Prins Thomas, who was at the time working at HS Records in Oslo. Thomas soon recognized his potential, and helped pushing Terje in the right directions. Oslo is a small place where like minded folks tend to join forces, and with his thorough musical understanding and nerdy like interest in old and new records spanning from that new Idjut Boys 12” to experimental synth bands very few of us have ever heard of, he soon became one of the key players on the Oslo electronic disco scene. Besides working on his own projects, Terje’s played on some of Prins Thomas’ tracks, and not to mention his remix of the Lindstrøm 12” “Another Station”.

Duff Disco - I Remember (Sunshine EP)

What with edits being the new black and every man and his Mac who is willing and able(ton) slapping an eight extra bars to the beginning of a track and calling it an their own, it takes a little something extra to stand out in the crowd. Duff Disco has proved himself to be a man who has that something extra. Championed by the likes of legendary edit King Greg Wilson to new kids on the scotch block, The Revenge and The 6th Borough Project, he has managed that rare feat, to slide in to a market that seemed flooded and make a real impact.

Following a mega-hyped remix of Dan Black’s ‘Symphonies’ on Polydor, Duff Disco has gone on to release edits of The Thin White Duke, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Mark Morrison, Steve Miller Band and Stretch that have all graced the top sales charts on Juno..

Jazzanova - Look What You're Doin' to Me (MCDE Remix)

MCDE - Danilo Plessow

At the tender age of 6, Danilo Plessow`s path in music started with playing drums. With his engagement in a school big band in Schwäbisch Gmünd (near Stuttgart/Germany) he found his love for jazz – and from 11 years of age on he started working on his own music using a computer and samples. Being influenced by Jazz, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop and House music, the first results were already released 5 years later -at the age of 15/ 16 ! -on Stuttgarts Pulver Records. Together with Joachim Tobias, Danilo had formed the House/Broken Beat project “Inverse Cinematics” (http://www.myspace.com/inversecinematics): Seven 12” Records, the highly acclaimed album "Passin’ through" and many remixes and compilation appearances followed. The project was and still is a favorite of some of the world’s most influential leftfield DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Rainer Trüby (with whom Danilo actually proves a productive collaboration), Michael Rütten or Benji B. After several other co-operations and solo projects in the Nujazz vein ('Hipster Wonkaz' with P.Valentino for Ubiquity Records or solo as 'Aphro Pzyko' for Raw Fusion), Danilo went back to his House music roots with the “Motor City Drum Ensemble” (MCDE).

This artist moniker refers to his home town Stuttgart, the world's cradle of the automobile and Germany’s very own motor city (w. Mercedes-Benz / Porsche / Bosch a. o.) and obviously is a link to Detroit as well. Taking influences from Soul, Disco and Detroit/Chicago 90`s House, the new moniker soon became his best known: He released five 12” in 2008, and especially his “Raw Cuts” series made him a shooting star in the Deep House scene, highlighted by the internet house/techno bible “Resident Advisor” for whom he did a mix-tape that is soon regarded as one of the best mixes of this significant podcast.
Having blown the world away with his ‘Raw Cuts’ series, released on his own label “MCDE” (run together with Pablo Valentino), Danilo has made an enormous impact on House and Techno. On ‘Juno Records’ all three 12" of the cult series are meanwhile charted within the top 8 of the all time 'Deep House' bestsellers and undoubtedly they are still belonging to the most played tracks on the dance-floors!
His other own label “Four Roses Recordings” has been doing also very good.

Thanks to his remarkable musical talent and overflowing creativity, Danilo has become a sought after and very successful re-mixer as well. With just 25 years of age and including all his projects he has already released on more than 25 labels.

No doubt, 2009 was MCDE’s year. In February , Beatport’s team of music experts had put him ahead of the up and coming Deep House artists worldwide. In the following months MCDE got a growing critical and popular wave of applause due to his amazing, sample-heavy ‘discoish’ house tunes, delivering the whole ‘Deep House’ notion with clarity and vision alongside a definitive style and by keeping the quality levels bubbling over. “MCDE has cultivated a style that is somehow incredibly loose and tight at the same time” and that has made him one of the most appreciated producers of dance music at its best who manages to blend House, light Techno and Disco with the same amount of success.

With his impressive slew of stunning remixes for the likes of DJ Sprinkles,Tiga, T-Coy, Steve Bug, DJ T, Tom Trago, Jazzanova, Presence, Akabu, Toby Tobias, Losoul, A. Lodemann, Caribou and others, Danilo created Deep House master pieces. Since march 2010 for example, his buoyant remix of NUfrequency's "Fallen Hero" is the nr.1 of the top 100 all-time charted tracks (of over 500.000 !) on RA's DJ Charts and he's ranked among the top 10 charted artists.
As well, his estimated podcasts (for RA/XLR8R/Juno Plus/…) proved that he understands much more about house than what simply emanates from his mixing desk.

Just as successful as he does with his top-ranking productions he works for the dance-floors as a very popular DJ – just being picked out by the RA-Poll one of the TOP 50 worldwide (as one of the youngest of course !). So Danilo now hits the road on a regular again to show some of his DJ skills, which already have brought him to the most famous venues all over Europe, the US, Russia, Asia and Australia .

A reviewer brought it into focus: “Danilo Plessow has been writing and composing electronic music since he was fourteen years old. Now at twenty-five, he has become one of the most sought after and accomplished artists in the world. From his staggeringly diverse productions, to his brain changing remix work, to his obsessive DJ sets around the world, this young man turns heads with seemingly everything he does. He has played some of the best clubs, parties, and radio shows on earth, and being on equally as large and respected recording labels.” -
“Danilo Plessow is still young, but it’s obvious from his 2009 that he has an innate talent for the simple things and will likely continue his run for a long, long time.” – Therefore better watch out, this boy‘s on a mission !

Maceo & The Macks - Soul Power 74

Maceo Parker''s name is synonymous with Funky Music.Parker got his start with the legendary James Brown and over the years his career has seen him an integral part of such luminary Funk icons as Bootsy Collins & Goerge Clinton.

Maceo is often remembered by aficionados of funk music as a sideman; appreciated mainly by those in the know. More than a decade and a half after starting a solo career in 1991 Maceo Parker has been enjoying a successful run as a headlining musician. For the past sixteen years Maceo has been building a new funk empire, fresh and stylistically diverse. He navigates deftly between James Brown''s 1960''s soul and George Clinton''s 1970''s freaky funk while exploring mellower jazz and the grooves of hip-hop. After joining james Brown''s band in the 1960s, Maceo grew to become the lynch-pin of the enclave for the best part of two decades. - his signature style helped define James'' brand of funk. Maceo is a living part of Funk History; he''s the subject of the famous line coined by James Brown, he solo summoning signature, “ Maceo, I want you to Blow!”

His collaborations over the years performing or recording or both have included Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, De La Soul, Dave Matthews Band and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers to name a few. From the breathtaking shows of James Brown to the landing of the Mothership, Maceo has been there - as close as it gets to some of the most exciting moments in musical history, contributing his sound as a constant point of reference.

Rick Wade- Night Station

Every legend has a "Once Upon A Time." The story of the now-legendary sound of Rick Wade begins in small-town western Michigan, less than an hour from Chicago's South Side. In the late 70's, when Chicago's Warehouse was groovin' to Frankie Knuckles, and the Philly, Salsoul and Classic Deep sounds were being pumped on the airwaves of WBMX, Rick Wade was just a small boy with a transistor radio glued to his ear.

In a 1999 interview with the editors of flatplastic.com, Rick remembers: "The mixes were really smooth and I remember how amazing I thought it was when they would blend two records together. It was back then that I knew I wanted to be a DJ just so I could blend records together and try to come up with something new."

Deep House, in its infancy, took hold of Rick Wade's imagination just like the funky rhythms of Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield had taken hold of his heart.

By the early 80s, Rick was making tapes for his friends at school and spinning at basement parties, controlling the pitch on his turntables by holding his finger on the record label. Within a few years, Rick Wade was off to college at the University of Michigan, performing at frat parties and gigging off-and-on at the infamous Nectarine Ballroom. Rick "24k" Wade (as he was known in those days) was quickly gaining notoriety for his smooth blends and deep house grooves.

At that same time, the Nectarine Ballroom was writing another page in music history as the home of Detroit techno pioneer Jeff "The Wizard" Mills. On Ann Arbor's WCBN, Rick started the popular Saturday night dance show "Journey to the Land of House." The early 90s found Rick Wade, at one point, doing three radio mixshows a week while at the same time spinning at various clubs in and around Detroit.

In 1993, Rick built his own recording studio and began producing his own distinctive brand of bangin' deep house material on his own label: Harmonie Park Records. Harmonie Park productions began to attract the attention of critics and record producers worldwide, just as Rick's mixshows and live DJ sets had attracted a following in the Detroit area.

Today, Rick Wade enjoys a reputation as one of the premier House mixshow producers in the world and his studio productions appear on over 15 different labels worldwide. In December Ő99 Rick was featured in the special double edition Germany's D2000 Magazine as their ŇDJ of the MonthÓ.

"Quantum Expressions," the latest Rick Wade EP on Detroit's Moods & Grooves label, is listed on dance charts around the globe. In March 2000, the recording holds #9 on Germany's Groove Magazine Top 50 and #1 on Australia's Hype Magazine Top 30.

"Deep Threats," the debut production of the new German label ATC, was even featured on Spain's Top Radio 106.1 FM as #12 on Kiko Navarro's playlist.

"Mr. Harmonie Park" hasn't lost touch with the live club scene that energizes his sound. Having spun along side world-class DJs such as Jeff Mills, Claude Young and Mike Huckaby, Rick has played every major underground club in Detroit. No one can forget the celebrated "Capricorn" party at the "Science" club in which Rick and Mike "Agent X" Clark performed a non-stop 8-hour set.

Rick was also the feature DJ at Mike Huckaby's well-known "Deep Transportation" release party. Held at the "Motor Lounge", Rick's set was simulcast live on 89X's underground mixshow "Maximum Overdrive".

"Deep Transportation" is also the phrase that best describes a Rick Wade set. Rick exposes the music to the crowd, taking the vibe to an emotional peak where it merges with the body, mind, and spirit into a continuous musical orgasm that continues long after the set is over. Rick has received accolades at San Francisco's "Staple" and thunderous cheers at "Mettle" in Toronto. The blends are so smooth and tight that party-goers have actually checked to see if Rick was really spinning live or playing pre-recorded, studio-produced deep house megamixes. Fans soon discover that every Rick Wade set is fresh and spontaneous, drawing its energy directly from the unique vibe of the party.

Having produced mixshows for top-rated underground programs such as the highly respected London-based pirate show "Still Waters" and RTR-FM's "Ben Stinga Show," Australia's cutting-edge source of deep underground tracks, Rick Wade's future looks extremely positive. He plans to step up his focus on live DJ appearances, using his international reputation to establish a presence in clubs and parties around the world.

ESG Moody

An art-funk ensemble from the South Bronx, ESG (Emerald Sapphire & Gold) was formed by sisters Renee, Valerie, and Marie Scroggins, all of whom handle vocals and percussion, and friends David Miles (guitar) and Leroy Glover (bass). ESG's music is centered around the sisters' complex polyrhythms with atmosphere supplied by bass and pop-flavored guitar. During their first incarnation, the group signed with 99 Records and issued a debut self-titled EP in 1981 that featured three live and three studio songs, the latter produced by the legendary Martin Hannett (Joy Division, etc.). 1982's ESG Says Dance to the Beat of Moody EP continued in a similar vein, as did their first full-length album, 1983's Come Away With ESG. ESG disbanded shortly thereafter, but unexpectedly re-formed in the early '90s, heralding their comeback with a self-titled 1991 compilation of previously released material. The group's work had become popular among hip-hop artists searching for samples, with such acts as TLC, the Wu-Tang Clan, the Beastie Boys, Big Daddy Kane, and indie rockers Unrest all making use of ESG beats; the group addressed this issue on the 1992 12" EP Sample Credits Don't Pay Our Bills. ESG Live! appeared in 1995, featuring both old and new material. The group continued to record during the late '90s, and even added Scroggins' daughters Chistelle and Nicole.

Lafayette Afro Rock Band - Hihache

Though little known in their native U.S., the Parisian-based Lafayette Afro Rock Band was among the premier funk outfits of the 1970s, later becoming a seemingly endless source of samples and breaks for artists from Public Enemy to Janet Jackson. The group was formed on Long Island, NY as the Bobby Boy Congress; deciding America was already overloaded with funk acts, they relocated to France in 1971, but when frontman Bobby Boy returned stateside, the remaining members -- guitarist Larry Jones, bassist Lafayette Hudson, keyboardist Frank Abel, horn players Ronnie James Buttacavoli and Arthur Young, drummer Ernest "Donny" Donable, and percussionists Keno Speller and Arthur Young -- renamed themselves Ice and became the house session band at producer Pierre Jaubert's Parisound studio. Regularly performing live in Paris' Barbesse district -- an area made up primarily of African immigrants -- Ice's driving funk became increasingly influenced by African rhythms and textures, and in the wake of their 1973 debut LP Each Man Makes His Own Destiny, Jaubert changed the group's name to the Lafayette Afro Rock Band.

Nina Simone - Here Comes the Sun

Nina Simone's version of the George Harrison classic Here Comes The Sun

Lyrics:

Here comes the sun little darlin'.
Here comes the sun an' I say,
it's alright.
It's alright.

Here comes the sun little darlin'.
Here comes the sun I say,
It's alright.
It's alright.

Little darlin' it's been a long cold and lonely winter.
Little darlin' it feels like years since you've been here.
Here comes the sun little darlin'.
Here comes the sun, I say,
It's alright.
It's alright.

Little darlin' the smiles are returning to the faces now.
Little darlin' it seems like years since you've been here.
Little darlin' it's been a long cold lonely winter.
Little darlin' it feels like years since you've been here.

(Here comes the sun)
Here comes the sun,
aren't you glad to see it.
I say yeah it's alright.

Here comes the sun little darlin',
I say it's alright little darlin'.

Here comes the sun.
Here comes the sun.
I say little darlin',
it seems like years since you've been here little darlin'.
Here comes the sun, babe it's alright now.
You can come on out now, it's alright now.

Womack & Womack - Teardrops

Music video by Womack & Womack performing Teardrops. (C) 1988 The Island Def Jam Music Group

Biography:

Many Soul music fans believe that, when tracing back the roots of modern Soul, all roads ran through Sam Cooke. Well, that is literally true in the case of the singing/songwriting duo Womack & Womack. Cecil Womack is one of the famous Womack brothers (the most notable being Bobby Womack) and was a member of the Valentinos, the sibling singing group that was mentored by Sam Cooke before his tragic death. Linda Womack is Sam Cooke's daughter (and was for a time Bobby's stepdaughter) and became Cecil's wife and musical partner.

Womack & Womack established a stellar reputation as songwriters of melodic, intelligent songs that were recorded by others especially during the period 1975 - 1990. Perhaps most notable of their songs were "Love TKO," originally recorded by Teddy Pendergrass and recently remade by Hall & Oates, Patti LaBelle's "Love Bankrupt" and the wonderful ballad "New Day," immortalized by George Benson.

Cecil and Linda also had a relatively short but notable recording career. Their 1983 debut album, Love Wars, was a critical favorite, and spun off the minor hit "Baby I'm Scared of You." It was a great album front-to-back, and included their own version of "TKO" as well as the smooth "Good Times." They followed over the next half decade with the solid but less commercially successful Radio M.U.S.I.C. Man, Conscience and Starbright before moving to RCA in 1991 for Family Spirit. Their 1993 recording Transformed Into The House Of Zekkariyas was their last as Womack and Womack.

Cecil and Linda moved to Africa in the 90s. They are now recording with their seven children as The House of Zekkariyas, and released the album Sub Conscience in 2002.

In 2004, Australia's Raven Records released Strange and Funny: The Best of Womack & Womack 1984-93.

Lytrics:

Whenever I hear goodbyes, remind me baby of you
I break down and cry, next time I'll be true, yeah
Fever for lost romance remind me baby of you
I took a crazy chance
Next time I'll be true, I'll be true, I'll be true
Footsteps on the dance floor remind me baby of you
Teardrops in my eyes, next time I'll be true, yeah
Whispers in the powder room
"She cries on every tune, every tune, every tune"

When I'm dancin' 'round, remind me baby of you
I really let you down, next time I'll be true, yeah
I took a crazy chance
"She cries on every tune, every tune, every tune"

Footsteps on the dance floor remind me baby of you
Teardrops in my eyes, next time I'll be true, yeah
Whispers in the powder room
"She cries on every tune, every tune, every tune"

And the music don't feel like it did when I felt it with you
Nothing that I do or feel ever feels like I felt it with you

Hurting deep inside, she cries on every tune
I break down and cry
"She cries on every tune, every tune, every tune"

Footsteps on the dance floor remind me baby of you
Teardrops in my eyes, next time I'll be true, yeah
Whispers in the powder room
"She cries on every tune, every tune, every tune"

Swayzak - Then there's her

Brown and Taylor formed back in 1993 and in those post-iron curtain times took much inspiration from the dark and cold eastern block. The Swayzak name came later as much inspired by Eastern Europe as it was Hollywood . . . this is indicative of the juxtaposition of Swayzak.

Before Googling and the Myspace Generation, information was spread by mouth and paper, reputations built on musical prowess and friendships. Swayzak used the technology of the times; fax, pagers, photocopiers and answering machines to spread the word. But it was only in 1997 by releasing their first vinyl “bueno/fukumachi” (a record of deep dubby minimal house inspired as much by manga as a trip to Spain) to much hulabaloo of the few who had picked up on their sound. Luckily this was enough to inspire the young chaps to make more records on their self funded label. A call from a legend also had its part, Laurent Garnier’s“ beautiful and moody” answering machine comment gave them much confidence in their sound.

As things moved forward via strange twists they found themselves in 1998 releasing a debut album “Snowboarding in Argentina“ to much crtical acclaim. An album with one misguided aim to fund a snowboarding holiday! one that hasn’t quite been achieved though Argentina has been gigged several times. However it did put them on the road to bigger things, playing everywhere from Chile to Japan and quite a few place in between. Giant Festivals and miniscule clubs and bars, museums, fashion shows, Spanish cathedrals, and even a week long party in a Montreal loft. Regulars at Fabric in London and Watergate of Berlin: two of the world's finest clubs - Swayzak keep filling floors.

One of the first artists to be released on Richie Hawtin's Minus label with their Theorem collaborations and having released four albums on K7, the legendary compilations of Groovetechnology and Fabric 11 crossing the paths between minimalism, deep house, electro and pure pop. Swayzak have released and remixed for : K7, Minus, Pokerflat, Playhouse, Klang, Simple, Logisitc, Force Trax, Mille Plateaux and even Sony .Their songs have featured on several commericals, tv shows, and hundereds of compilations.

Their live shows are exactly that, never rehearsed and 100% improvised taking a journey like jazz did in the past. In these days of audio perfection Swayzak enjoy to be different, not quite playing the game as it should be played. Whilst embracing technology using unsynced laptops and outboard effects to create a dub inspired sound often much heavier than their studio works. They often play as a pair or with live vocals from collaborator Richard Davis and percussion from Francesco Brini..

2009 sees the re-release of Snowboarding in Argentina, Swayzak's oh so innocent seminal album inspired by the Berlin/Detriot/ Chigaco/ New York music of the early 90’s .Originally released to critical acclaim in 1998 , this album originated in two forms ,one for the US market and one for the UK. However it was in Germany that Swayzak found themselves week after week, somehow stumbling upon a scene that was soon to be embraced by the world. Starting in june 2009 Swayzak will present their T bar London monthly night “Serieculture” an intentional unconventional residency.

Allen Spion - Fallen For Her

Producing since 2006, Allen Spion is constantly morphing his sound without forgetting his roots. Although Detroit techno of the nineties is what dragged him into electronic music, Allen said that he was born at the wrong time while alluding to the music of the eighties which, for him, can hardly find a replacement these days.
Maybe it is this unexperienced phase in his musical life what is very much drawn to his production today.

He doesnt like for his style to be labeled, altough its mainly variations of deep, tech & melodic music.

Has released several EPs on acclaimed labels and a number of remixes as it likes to remix every original in a completely different light.

In parallel with the production, he is also performing as a live P.A.

From 2011 he started a new project called "Disrupted Project",trying to present his views on dub, detroit tech house forms.

Also with 2011 he started a podcast series called "Waveforms" wich is mainly oriented on deep/dub/dark/detroit techno variations. Waveforms soon gained respect and a large mass of followers all over the world. Feel free to check it out!

Commodores - Lady (You Bring Me Up)

The Commodores is an American funk/soul band of the 1970s and 1980s. The members of the group met as mostly freshmen at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in 1968, and signed with Motown in November 1972, having first caught the public eye opening for The Jackson 5 while on tour. The Commodores have sold over 75 million records worldwide.

This group is best known for their ballads, such as "Easy" and "Three Times a Lady", but, for the most part, the group mainly recorded funky, driven dance-floor hits which include "Brick House", "The Bump", "Fancy Dancer", and "Too Hot ta Trot". The Commodores originally called themselves the Mystics, but wanted to change the name. To choose a new name William King opened a dictionary and randomly picked a word. "We lucked out," he remarked with a laugh when telling this story to People (magazine). "We almost became The Commodes!"
"Machine Gun", the instrumental title track from the band's debut album, became a staple at American sporting events, and is similarly featured in many films, including Boogie Nights and Looking for Mr. Goodbar. It reached #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975. Another instrumental, "Cebu" (named after an island in the Philippines), later became a staple in the Quiet storm format. Three albums released in years 1975 and 1976 (Caught in the Act, Movin' On, Hot On The Tracks) are considered the peak of their harder funk period. Only one such hit from that era scored big, the funk-driven "Brick House" which reached #5 in the U.S. After those recordings the group started to move towards softer sound. That move was hinted from their 1976 Top Ten hits "Sweet Love" and "Just to Be Close to You." In 1977 the Commodores scored a ballad hit with "Easy", which became the group's biggest hit yet, reaching #4 in the U.S. After years of toiling in the Top Ten, the group finally reached #1 in 1978 with the sweet "Three Times a Lady." The year 1979 saw the Commodores score another Top Five ballad hit "Sail On" before reaching the top of the charts once again with another ballad, "Still." The group had no major hits in 1980, but by 1981 they were back with a vengeance, scoring Top Ten hits with the ballad "Oh No" (#4 U.S.) and their first upbeat single in almost five years, "Lady (You Bring Me Up)" (#8 U.S.).

Examine - Evo District

After having done a bunch of well received single releases, 'Major Minor' is Examine's debut album on the infamous Manual Music label.

"Creativity is useless if it's no fun"; a simple thought that keeps young Zagreb based producer Examine floating on machines, waveforms and virtual instruments for years now. Focused on dancefloor music consumers as much as home listeners, his sound is marked by the words "deep" "tech" "dub" "danceable" and is lead only by his raw feeling of determining good.

His career as a composer didn't start so long ago, it took years for his sound to evolve to the point where no boundaries are set and no stereotypes are followed, the only thing that matters is how the music sounds and what message it bring across to it's consumers.

"Regardless of the club experience as a clubber/dj or some other non-music thing, there is always a part of that specific moment during which your heart stops for a moment, eyes closed, brain frozen, taking your mind taking a snapshot for day after or even a lifetime. I want to recreate these moments in my unique way, want to expeience that feeling again. That's my music."

Black Ivory was a R&B group from Harlem, which had a number of hits in the 1970s, including "Don't Turn Around", "You and I" (both of which featured Larry Blackmon from Cameo on drums), "I'll Find a Way (The Loneliest Man in Town)", "Spinning Around", "What Goes Around (Comes Around)", "Will We Ever Come Together", and "Mainline."

The group features songwriter and prolific disco producer Leroy Burgess, Stuart Bascombe, and Russell Patterson. They were managed by Patrick Adams, an executive at the Today/Perception record company. Burgess was the lead voice of the majority of their hits in the early '70s. With Today/Perception being a small label, the promotion of Black Ivory's singles scarcely got beyond the East Coast. This lack of exposure, coupled with the rise of disco and the fact Adams was beginning to branch out into other projects, caused Black Ivory to lose steam.

Kleeer - Groove With You

Kleeer was an American New York based funk, disco and post-disco band which was formed in 1972 under the name The Jam Band, as a backup group to different disco bands and vocalists. The group consisted of Woody Cunningham, vocalist/percussionist Paul Crutchfield, guitarist Richard Lee and bassist Norman Durham.

After a switch to the name Pipeline in 1975, the group also decided to switch to making hard rock instead of disco. Record labels competed to sign them but, when they finally ended up at Columbia Records, their single "Gypsie Rider" did not fare well commercially.
In 1976 they got the opportunity to become The Universal Robot Band along with underground disco producers Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael. This project was more successful than their former projects. They made the single "Barely Breaking Even" alongside singer Leroy Burgess, and they also recorded an album. The group toured as The Universal Robot Band until 1978.

After 1978, the band decided to make all their music themselves under the new name of Kleeer.

Between 1979 and 1985 the group released seven albums and had several hits in the US Billboard Hot 100 and in R&B charts. The most mentionable are "Tonight's the Night", "Winners", "Intimate Connection", and "Get Tough." The sound was now more focused on 1980s style funk, and electronic instruments, like vocoders and synthesizers.
After the 1985's album Seeekret, the band disappeared for unknown reasons. Most of the musicians continued working with other projects. In the 1990s, however, the group re-formed as Kleeer at some occasions.

The group's influence today is best found in many hip hop songs, where DJs have frequently sampled Kleeer, for example by 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, DJ Quik, Lil Jon and The Eastside Boys. "Keeep Your Body Workin", which reached number 54 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart in 1979, was "reworked" into an updated recording by Tony Moran featuring Martha Wash, under the title "Keep Your Body Working." The Moran/Wash version reached number one on the Hot Dance Club Play chart in December 2007.
Woody Cunningham died on January 9, 2010.

Cottam 1 - Side B

Cottam has been spinning other peoples records from the age of 14 - after ‘borrowing’ his brothers 80s soul and early hip hop he discovered house music and was hooked. Clubbing in the north through his teens, as acid became rave became progressive DJs like Dave Clarke introduced him to harder techno and electro, a love that still lasts to this day with DJs like surgeon and the black country crew introducing dubstep into their sets. After so long loving the music and tinkering with his own ideas, 2009 saw his first house experiments emerge, often re-working soul and hip hop tracks. The first limited edition COTTAM 12” was released in September 2009 to a rapturous reception gaining record of the week status at Phonica, Rub-a-Dub and Piccadilly in the UK

Fudge Fingas - What Works

When conversation turns to clubbing in Scotland, most would agree that Glasgow all too often has the upper hand over Edinburgh. Nonetheless, when it comes to deep house, the Firecracker collective are doing their utmost to score a few points back for the capital. Gavin Sutherland, AKA Fudge Fingas, has been on board with them since their inception in 2004, with the gorgeous soulful house of his 'Gettin' Together' helping to make the label's lavishly packaged debut 10-inch stand out from the crowd upon its release.

Sutherland's earlier productions on the now defunct Pohm Pohm and Hush Hush labels hinted at his keen ear for jazzy melodies and funky organic percussion, but certainly didn't prepare us for the rich and dusky quality of his Firecracker material. He's also proved to be a dab hand in creating more uptempo tracks for Trus'me's Prime Numbers imprint, with recent single About Time managing to flip between laid back robotic boogie and shuffling 3/4 time techno. Sutherland will follow in the footsteps of his Firecracker colleague Linkwood when he releases his debut album on the label later this year.

Mr Scruff - Kalimba

Real name: Andy Carthy.

Once Mr Scruff was plain Andy Carthy. And then he wasn’t… Sometime artist, DJ, Peak District wanderer, and Manchester’s very own very own, Mr Carthy started his musical career a mere six years ago.

Formerly a fine art student part-time at Sheffield University, Scruff decided to explore his strange passion both in rounded line drawings and music. An electro-ska-hip-hop kid and bedroom bod from what hip hop fellas call time, Carthy started making tapes in 1983 using the very finest in pause button technology. His passion for hearing music that he couldn’t hear out anywhere else led him into the world of DJing - first of all as a kid with one deck - then hearing electro albums and being determined to mix. The result was that by 1994 he was out DJing in clubs.

Despite DJing being his first and foremost love, Scruff had always messed about with the recording process; age 8 he started making up tapes of pretend radio shows (oh where are those tapes now?) and then faffing about on drum machines; by the age of 13 he was having a laugh with mates being in silly bands with silly names. The very end result of all this was a good few vinyl outings on Rob’s Records and Pleasure, including the now-legendary track, Chicken In A Box - simple maybe, but simply bloody barmy-good. “A happy accident,” he claims. “Well, more like an educated guess...” Whilst his total love of DJing informs his music-making ability, he doesn’t consciously try to make something that will work on the dancefloor; he’s more likely to want to know “Do you like it? Does it make you go wibbly. Does it frimble?” Questions we should all be asking ourselves.

Since his first vinyl excursion he has recorded for over 25 labels including Warp, Sirkus, Disorient, Blood & Fire, Cup Of Tea and, of course, Ninja Tune. He has remixed Nightmares On Wax and Bim Sherman and refused to remix Nigel Kennedy. He’s worked with Mark Rae and Grand Central. He has DJed all over the bloody shop, turning down more gigs than he takes on. If they won't let him have a long spot, he doesn't bother; a 'take-the-money-and-run' merchant he certainly is not. He has dug in crates and found obscure records with references to marine fauna. He’s done bloody loads, basically, all of it with more than a vague hint of humour. France Telecom (the French equivalent of BT) were suitably impressed and used his single Get A Move On as part of their national TV advertising campaign, as did Volvo in N. America - the Scruffy one didn't see it as something to get excited about. And he's got more fans. Most notably, Madonna recently said in Mixmag of music she was playing at home, "And Mr Scruff I love, that weird little album (Keep It Unreal) that's got so much personality". Mr Scruff was characteristically unimpressed.

Since their debut album for INFRACom!'s 10th anniversary in 1992 [re:jazz] achieved an excellent reputation being one of the internationally most successful jazz acts out of Germany in the recent decade with -so far- more than 60.000 copies sold and more then 80 contributions to compilations worldwide.

On their past albums they used to colaborate with national and international known guests like Viktoria Tolstoy, Nils Petter Molvaer, Till Brönner, Erik Truffaz, Lisa Bassenge, Joy Denelane, Nathan Haines, akiko, Ultra Naté, Jhelisa Anderson, Lisa Bassenge, Ack von Royen, Nils Wogram, Thomas Siffling, Heinz-Dieter Sauerborn, Annemarie Roelofs, Axel Schlosser Christoph Auperle a.o.

The way [re:jazz] treats and re-works music has achieved such an enomous popularity that beside their own releases other well known artists like 4 Hero or Stephan Remmler asked them to rework a pieces of their music too.

They received remix treatments themself from heavyweight electronic producers like Bugge Wesseltoft, Nicola Conte, Swell Session, Akufen, Dublex Inc, Yukihiro Fukitomi, Jazztronik, Patchworks, Kiki Navarro, Christian Prommers Drumlesson, The Dynamics a.o.

Their second album "Point of View" released in 2004 was highly acclaimed by the press and followed by a successful clubtour and invitations to renowned jazz festival like Traumzeit, City Jazz Nights, Leverkusener Jazztage, Balaton Sound Festival, Jazzfest Vienna and others.

„Expansion“, the third album released in 2006, presents a new side of the the band. Besides awsome reinterpretations [re:jazz] released their first own compositions, fitting perfeclty into their [re:jazz] style.

In spring 2008 they returned with a brand new 2-disc release feat. their first live album recorded at the "Motion Blue yokohama" during their Japan tour.

Beside the live album there is a 90 minutes dvd documentary about [re:jazz] touring and performing live in Japan with interviews, statements from and about [re:jazz] to give you a closer image of the group itself. Combined with impressions from Japan and the wonderful people they met during their tour, the dvd is more then a pure concert dvd. It takes you on a journey with the band to Japan.

Their fourth and latest album "Nipponized" is released in autumn 2008. Together with the live album it rounds up the "little" Japan series of [re:jazz] and features re-interpretations of japanese club-music classics beside new compositions by [re:jazz].

The [re:jazz] band has seven members plus a technician: Inga Luehning (voc), Oliver Leicht (sax), Jan Stuermer(git), Matthias Vogt (p), Heiko Himmighoffen (perc), Andreas Manns (b), Volker Schmidt (dr). The band is formed exclusively of young and extremely gifted musicians. Their music puts a smile on the face of their audience.
