Marvin Gaye "I Want You" (1976)

"I Want You" is Marvin Gaye's 1976 hit song released on the Tamla Motown label. The album was his first recorded studio material released in three years and marked a change in direction for Gaye, leaving his trademark Motown soul for funky, light-disco soul. Much of Gaye's music encompassed spirituality, sexuality, and vulnerability.

Originally conceived by Motown songwriter Leon Ware and his songwriting partner "T-Boy" Ross, it was originally intended to be included in Ware's Musical Massage album. When Ware, who was also signed to the label as a solo artist, presented the rough draft of his album to Motown-CEO Berry Gordy, the mogul was appreciative of the songs, including a rough version of "I Want You". But after hearing it, he convinced Ware to give some of the songs to Marvin Gaye, who was coming off the release of his acclaimed 1973 record, Let's Get It On, his final duet recording with Diana Ross and a commercially successful live album and was coming off a US tour at the time. Marvin, who called himself a perfectionist, had struggled with creating a follow-up album to Let's Get It On. When Ware played Gaye the rough draft of "I Want You", Marvin, then inspired by his relationship with his nineteen-year-old girlfriend Janis Hunter, was motivated to record a convincing performance of the song, which was about a man trying to convince a wayward lover that he wanted the woman to love him as deeply as he loved her.

Purportedly recorded at Marvin's Room, the singer's new recording studio in Los Angeles, Marvin also reportedly recorded the song while lying on his back of his sofa according to Ware, who said that he couldn't see Gaye at first but then discovered a laid-back Marvin delivering the song in his trademark tenor vocals.

Diana Ross, whose brother T-Boy co-wrote the song, remade "I Want You" for her "I Love You" album, released in 2007.

Robert Palmer released a medley of "I Want You" and another Marvin Gaye song, "Mercy Mercy Me" in January, 1991. This single reached #9 in the UK charts.

"I Want You" is also the name of Australian television star Toni Pearen's debut single from 1993.

Madonna recorded the song with British trip-hop group, Massive Attack. The cover was featured on the tribute album Inner City Blues:

The Music of Marvin Gaye as well as being something to remember and be collected, with a career spanning over more than a decade, it's no wonder that many of today's artists continue to honor and try to emulate Gaye. Although no longer a physical presence, his existence as an artist is one that is sure to be a vital part of the millennium and beyond.

Artist biography:

Since the early 90ies it is impossible to imagine Leipzig’s House-scene without Frankman, once born as Andreas Greiner. Being influenced by the Hip-Hop of the 80ies and the arising Techno- and House-movement he soon developed his own and unmistakable style, which can still be recognized in his recent sets and productions. A style which is one or even the reason why he was significantly involved in the development of the presently popular Leipzig’s Deep-House-style.

After various private parties, already in 1992 Frankman got a residency at the legendary “Distillery”. Later, his sets in the “Elastic” (since 1996) and in the “Redlight” (since 1997) left its mark on Leipzig’s club-scene. The nights in the former “Distillery’s” vault and the annual „Underbridge“ open–airs (since 1992) became legendary. Guest performances all over Germany followed, for example in the “Globus”/”Tresor” (Berlin), “Club Trinidad” (Dortmund), “Liqiud Lounge” (Hannover) and the “Kassablanca” (Jena).

Since the mid-90ies, Frankman focussed on his own productions. In 1998 his first record “The Past” was published by the label “FM Musik” which was especially founded together with Ralf Bürger (probably the nation’s most dynamic party- and club-organizer) for this purpose. Soon, further publications on “FM Musik” followed, as well as contributions to “Freude am Tanzen”, “Draft” and last but not least to Steve Bug’s “Dessous Rec.”. It was only a question of time that he obtained the first orders for remixes.

With his typical style he refined the tracks of Lorenzo, Marlow, Pino Shamlou, Phonique and others. Asked about his most important publications, he always mentions “Unterzucker” (1999 “FM Musik”). The record’s name, by the way, resulted from the delay of the sound-engineer, who excused himself with having had a low blood sugar level.

Since 2001 joint productions with various colleagues became more frequent. So, working with DJ Dan Confusion from Leipzig, the “seven EP” was published on “FM Musik”. Co-operations with de Bear (“Dessous Rec.”) and Matthias Tanzman (“Moon Harbour”) followed. In 2002 his first longplayer “different divides” on “Draft Recordings” came out. In 2003 for Frankman it was time for some changes: With „Auris Rec.“ a new Deep-House label was thrown on the market. Since, publications of for example Lars Behrenroth, Metrosoul and Parov Stelar followed.

Of course Frankman often takes care of the matter himself -in form of remixes, for example of “Deepthoughts” and “Smooth Society”, or in form of complete 12”s. In the view of his work’s quality, it is not a surprise that Frankman’s productions can be found on internationally renowned singles/records, such as Steve Bug’s „The Flow“ (2002 „Cocoon Rec.“) and Harley & Muscle’s „Play Deep House“ (2006 “Soulstar”).

Little Dragon - Twice

Little Dragons are a totally unique alt-pop group hailing from Gothenburg in Sweden. Made up of high school friends Yukimi Nagano, Erik Bodin, Fredrik Källgren Wallin and Håkan Wirenstrand the group have been recording music together since the mid nineties, although the first Little Dragon single was not released until 2006.

Currently they have two fantastic albums under their belts - their self-titled debut and Machine Dreams. They have also collaborated with the likes of Koop, Andreas Saag and The Gorillaz. Their sound is infused with the otherworldly and brings together abstract electronic sounds, driving percussion and heartfelt lyrics into a dazzling pop confection.

This radio session is a recording of the bands opening set at the Electronic Beats Festival Cologne and is a fantastic performance that captures their richly detailed sound.

Confusion - Aleem Feat Leroy Burgess

Leroy Burgess is a prolific singer/recording artist, songwriter, keyboard player and producer. He is related to Thom Bell and Kool & The Gang members Robert "Kool" Bell, Ronald Bell (a.k.a. Khalis Bayyan) and Amir Bayyan (a.k.a. Kevin Bell) of the Kay-Gees.
Burgess was a member of Black Ivory and lead vocalist of the majority of their hits in the early '70s. The band was signed by small East Coast label Today/Perception, which was run by Patrick Adams, also the band's manager. Burgess frequently collaborated with Adams in writing songs, as well.

DPlay - Huub Sand ( Running Back )

It's hard to understand—even for a football fan—what "Huub Sand" has to do with Huub Stevens, former coach of 1997 UEFA Cup winners Schalke 04, but we'll go with it anyway. It's not worth questioning what inspired such sublime deep house. Instead, it's best just to sit back in wonderment at the dubby chords that underline the forward chugging momentum of the tune, slowly but surely unfolding ever so gracefully over eight minutes. We've come to expect as much from Dplay—sans his partner-in-crime Manuel Tur here in the title, but not in the production credits, whatever that means.

Luckily, he also comes to play on the B-side as well with "Tschaka," a dubbed-up Motor City Drum Ensemble track that drones along in its latter half like a drunken elephant, and "Schroulé," which has some congas to go along with its bass lick. Both are the sort of tools that Running Back has come to be known for, and both are solid upbeat counterparts to the moodiness of "Huub Sand." Another solid release from Running Back.

Daso - Why Try

Release:

Label: Nsyde
Catalog#: NSYDE001
Format: Vinyl, 12"
Country: Germany
Released: 15 Nov 2010
Genre: Electronic
Style: Deep House, Experimental, Ambient

Indian born, Berlin based artist DASO (aka Daso Franke) drops the debut release on the Nsyde imprint. "Why Try" ever so subtly creeps into your brain, with an ethereal vocal hook working as the glue that keeps the raw drum programming and twinkling keys stuck together. Reade Truth's remix is a more tribal affair, with the keys given room to breath amidst a growing swell of rich Detroit atmospherics. Hogging the whole flipside is NYC underground legend Fred P, who keeps it dusky and deep on his version of "Why Try", chopping up the vocals and submerging them in warm, emotive chords. A superb debut for Nsyde that has already seen love from Keith Worthy, Daniel Bell, Basic Soul Unit and Efdemin.

Kassem Mosse - Untitled (LAID)

Using the Workshop label as a platform for their esoteric take on deep house, Lowtec and Kassem Mosse have been able to establish themselves as enigmatic without sacrificing consistency in style over the last couple of years. Over a similar period, Dor has used Laid to peddle comparatively straight-edged deep grooves, curating work from artists bringing the established conventions of golden-era US house into the 21st century. On this guest appearance from the Workshop stalwarts, Lowtec and Kassem Mosse offer their take on the Laid principles and attempt to trace points of synergy between the two labels.

Both producers' eclectic record crates showcase a love for house, disco and the rougher-edged techno of their native Germany, all of which are weaved together in the Workshop EP seamlessly. Pitched above the 120 BPM mark and adopting relatively straightforward sequencing, both tracks are faster and cleaner than what we might expect to hear on their home label.

Given the weight of its dramatic percussion and energetic propulsion, Kassem Mosse's A-side is bound to attract the most club attention. Laced with an analogue fetishism for added grit, it's a subtly tough number suited for sets that err on the boundary between deep house and techno. There's something slightly disconcerting (and very satisfying) about the darkness lurking beneath the warmth of the imposing lead synths and frenetic high-end drums, which come together to bring well-balanced austerity and punch to the track.

Lowtec's oft-indulged experimental side gets toned down on his rework of "Use Me," whose seductive cooing over low-slung bass and twinkling melody guarantees results on more woozy dance floors. Fans of Lowtec's Workshop efforts will agree that his biggest successes have been achieved by throwing curveballs at functional elegance, and the lack of a similar approach here doesn't do justice to his ability to deliver a more challenging listen.

Rick Wilhite - Drum Patterns & Memories (KDJ)

Rick "The Godson" Wilhite's position within the ranking of his Detroit peers and amongst the city's respected house music heritage is impressive. Learning the trade from scratch, Wilhite went through the experience of being a record buyer as well as a record dealer with his own store (Vibes - New and Rare Music), worked on the other side of the fence as a producer and editor for labels like KDJ, Stilove4music and as part of the infamous Three Chairs collective (Kenny Dixon Jr., Theo Parrish and Malik Pittman being the other members). Rick has also worked alongside peers and pioneers Derrick May and Juan Atkins, recorded as DOC, Tech-12, Working Mixx or The Godson and has always been a mover and shaker behind the scenes. But on top of all that, he is notorious for being a DJ. One that still carries and loves vinyl, one that knows past, present and doesn't shy away from the future and most of all a DJ that knows what a party could and should be.
