Lil' Louis & The World - Saved My Life (maw dub)

Louis Sims, Chicago, Illinois, USA. A leading Chicago house producer during the late 80s, Lil Louis is the son of Bobby Sims, one of Chicago’s premier blues guitarists who has played with B.B. King and Bobby Bland. Louis began DJing in the mid-70s and was soon running his own club, the Future. By the mid-80s he had established himself as one of the leading attractions on Chicago’s dance music scene. His single releases during this period included ‘How I Feel’, but the breakthrough moment in his career came with 1987’s club classic ‘French Kiss’. The track, featuring vocals by Shawn Christopher, was later licensed from Diamond Records to CBS Records and ffrr Records, and peaked at number 2 in the UK charts in 1989. It was banned by the BBC because of its female ‘vocal’ (heavy breathing) being too near the knuckle. The censorship was not merely a British invention, however. New York DJ Frankie Bones was sacked for playing it at his club night in breach of prior warnings. Other hits in the piano-house mould followed, notably ‘I Called U’. Again this was no ephemeral dance tune, concerning instead a disastrous relationship with an ex-girlfriend which got so out of hand he was forced to take out a restraining order.

Lil’ Louis debut album was a surprisingly pleasing and varied selection, with tracks spanning soul and jazz (and including contributions from his father). Louis was responsible for singing, producing and much of the instrumentation. He returned after a long break in 1992 with ‘The Club Lonely’ and ‘Saved My Life’, having relocated from Chicago to New York, and taken time out to update his keyboard skills and reacquaint himself with the jazz records of his youth. He returned to the club scene in 1995 with ‘Freedom’, using the Black Magic moniker. The R&B-orientated ‘Clap Your Hands’ single was released two years later.

Silver Convention - Fly Robin Fly

Silver Convention was a German disco recording act of the 1970s. The group was originally named "Silver Bird Convention", or "Silver Bird".

The group was initiated in Munich by producers and songwriters Sylvester Levay and Michael Kunze. "Silver" was Levay's nickname. Using female session vocalists for their first recordings, they scored a successful single in the United Kingdom in 1975 with the song "Save Me". They were only a studio group, and realised then that they would need to find professional entertainers for presentation to the public.

They recruited vocalists Linda Thompson (real name Linda Ubelherr, who would be billed on her solo records as Linda G. Thompson, formerly a member of Les Humphries Singers), Penny McLean (real name Gertrude Wirschinger) and Ramona Wulf (real name Ramona Kraft, born to a German mother and black American G.I. father). Their first production was the minor successful single named ironically "There Is Always Another Girl".

As "Silver Convention" they scored two major U.S. hit singles. "Fly, Robin, Fly," of which the complete lyrics consisted of only six distinct words (Fly, Robin, Up, To, The, Sky), scored three weeks at #1 in 1975, and won the group a Grammy Award for Best R&B Instrumental Performance. Initially the song was titled "Run, Rabbit, Run", changed by the writers moments before the recording took place. Their next success "Get Up And Boogie", which also consisted of only six distinct words, scored three weeks at #2 in 1976. Their next release, "No No Joe," only scored #60 in September 1976. The further singles released by the trio attempted to duplicate the sound that had made them successful briefly, but they were only minor successes. At this time, Linda G. Thompson left the group and was replaced by New Yorker Rhonda Heath, who was chosen in preference to other hopefuls at an open casting call to become the newest singer for the group.

Michael Kunze actually wrote the lyrics on the first two albums under the pseudonym Stephan Prager. During this time the three singers released their own solo work. McLean and Thompson achieved hit singles with "Lady Bump" and "1, 2, 3, 4 ... Fire!", and "Ooh What a Night" respectively. Wulf's solo effort was only a moderate success.

Silver Convention represented Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest 1977 with a song entitled "Telegram", finishing eighth. The entry had only English lyrics (with considerably more words than their past hits), but was allowed to enter in spite of the language rule being reintroduced this year, because the song was chosen to represent Germany before the reintroduction was announced. In 1994, Rhonda Heath returned to Eurovision, providing backing vocals and keyboards for the German entry Wir Geben 'Ne Party performed in German by Mekado. This entry did better than Silver Convention's effort, placing 3rd out of the 25 entries in Dublin.

With a new producer (John Davis), and a revised line-up of singers (Suzie McClosky aka Zenda Jacks, Rhonda Heath and Ramona Wulf), Silver Convention was successful again during 1978 with the album Love in a Sleeper. The 12" single release from the LP was "Spend the Night With Me" backed with "Mission To Venus".

Levay also worked with Giorgio Moroder, and Kunze began work with Jim Steinman. The solo careers of the three singers ended quickly and they left the music industry. Levay and Kunze later collaborated on the successful Vienna productions of the musicals Elisabeth, Mozart! and Rebecca.

Franck Roger Feat. Jovonn - Remember (Talk Mix)

It must be deliciously bewildering to get recognition from those who inspired you in the very beginning. French House Music DJ - producer Franck Roger is no stranger to this feeling. When not travelling the world accepting club invitations, this devoted crate digger (don’t ask him about Serato) spends time in his Parisian studio messing with beats and loops. Never not working, Franck Roger is about to take things to another level as beat maker, a talent scout (through his Real Tone Records label), and the DJ you want to dance to. More beats, more gigs, more love.

In the beginning was… the Beat.

Was little Franck Roger hit by a disco ball when his parents weren’t watching? No one knows, but there were definitely a lot of signs in his early years that indicated future life developments. As a kid, Franck remembers playing around with his audiotape recorder, editing radio hosts voices out and making sure the beat matched when taping the next song… A D.Y.I. introduction to DJing that soon translated into a mission. It was already about natural instinct: a need for beats, loops and some sounds interfering. The starting point of house music in the first place. “I don’t think I was made to do anything else but making music.” From hypnotic, stripped-down and minimal productions – the ubiquitous “M word”, to steamier, deeper or more sophisticated moods, Franck Roger has managed, in less than ten years, to create a distinctive musical signature that earned him ongoing praises and respect from the likes of Kerri Chandler, Laurent Garnier, Louie Vega, Osunlade and more... Although he may have earned early attention for his classic vocal productions (No More Believe, If I), his work soon gave way to a multicolor sound that now finds home in venues from Berlin afterhours club Panorama Bar to Parisian cosy and intimate Djoon Club.

Looking for the perfect beat.

In the last few years Franck developed and redefined his musical landscape, through travelling, experimenting and more importantly beat making. It comes as no surprise that today, party promoters from Japan to South Africa (where House music reigns supreme) invite him regularly. With a studio as his best friend, Franck Roger fears nothing: “Most of the time I use my studio as a sanctuary, a shelter from city mayhem or life complications... I search for a beat and build the tracks from here”. This is what you would call the Beat approach to production. “You never know where it’s going to take you”, he warns. “Sometimes it doesn’t go far at all, simply because it just doesn’t have to.” Luckily for us, this ability to create severe club bangers comes with an insatiable need to rock the crowd.

Making you sweat in the club, and getting a kick out of it.

Music and dancing have always been inseparable for Franck Roger, like that night he first entered a club in the mid 90’s: “I started going out in the mid-90 when I wasn’t even legal - I was one of those club kids. That’s when it all became clear to me what I was gonna do with my life”, he recalls. At the time, the loudest place to hear House music was the legendary Rex Club in Paris. Folks such as DJ Deep and Laurent Garnier would play there all the time. Fast forward to 2008: the Rex Club is now home to Franck’s successful Real Tone Records party “The 5 Beats” showing club kids du jour how it should be done, alongside prestigious guest dj’s he can also call friends.

As Franck Roger plays more and more club gigs throughout the world, sharing his love for music, the more firm his position remains in the great legacy of DJ’s that matter.

Orbital - Beached (Soundtrack to "The Beach")

Orbital are an electronic music duo consisting of brothers Phil Hartnoll and Paul Hartnoll formed in Sevenoaks, Kent, England whose career originally lasted from 1989 until 2004.

Orbital took their name from Greater London’s orbital motorway, the M25, which was central to the early rave scene and party network in the South East during the early days of acid house. One of the biggest names in British electronica during the 1990s, Orbital were both critically and commercially successful, being particularly known for an element of live improvisation during their shows, a rarity with techno acts. They were initially influenced by early electro and punk rock.

In 1989, Orbital recorded a track called “Chime” on their father’s cassette deck. It was released on Oh Zone Records in December 1989, and re-released on FFRR a few months later. The track became a rave anthem, reaching number 17 in the UK charts, and earning them an appearance on Top of the Pops, during which they wore anti-Poll Tax t-shirts. A few singles and EPs followed, and their first self-titled album, a collection of tracks recorded at various times, was released in late 1991.

In late 1992, the “Radiccio” EP barely reached the UK top 40, but it included probably their most well-known song, “Halcyon”. The song featured a backwards sample of Kirsty Hawkshaw from Opus III’s “It’s a Fine Day”, and B-side “The Naked and the Dead” was similarly based on a line from Scott Walker’s rendition of Jacques Brel’s song “Next”. Halcyon was dedicated to the Hartnolls’ mother, who was addicted to the tranquiliser Halcion for many years.

The duo’s popularity grew rapidly with the release of their second album, titled “Orbital 2” in 1993. The album featured complex arrangements and textures, and opens with the two minute track “Time Becomes”, which comprises nothing more than 2 slightly detuned, looped samples of a Michael Dorn line from Star Trek: The Next Generation, “…where time becomes a loop” being played simultaneously through the left and right channels, respectively (until 1 cycle of phase difference has happened). This very same sample was used at the beginning of “The Mobius”, the opening track in the previous album. This audible pun was intended to make listeners believe that they had bought a mis-pressed album (Orbital 1 packaged in Orbital 2). The album reached #28 on the UK album charts, staying in the top chart for fifteen weeks. Halcyon was remixed for the album, as “Halcyon + On + On”. The version played live has also gained notoriety amongst fans for containing a complete mashup of diverse samples including “You Give Love A Bad Name” by the band “Bon Jovi”, “Heaven Is A Place On Earth” by Belinda Carlisle, and most recently “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” by the band “The Darkness”. The first two albums are commonly known as the “Green Album” and the “Brown Album”, after the colour of their covers.

Orbital won a NME award for “Vibes Best Dance Act” early in 1994, but it was their headline appearance at the Glastonbury Festival on 25 June 1994 that brought them most attention. Q magazine classed it as one of the top 50 gigs of all time, and in 2002 included Orbital in their list of “50 Bands to See Before You Die”. Orbital gave an improvisational element to live electronic music as the brothers mixed and sequenced their tracks on the fly, wearing their trademark head-mounted torches behind banks of equipment. Orbital were one of the few electronic acts invited to play at Woodstock ‘94.

The third album “Snivilisation” was released in August 1994. Alison Goldfrapp provided vocals on a couple of the tracks, including the single “Are We Here?”. This track also included a sample from “Man At C&A” by “The Specials”. Among the remixes of Are We Here? was “Criminal Justice Bill?” - four minutes of silence, a reference to the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, which was in part intended to clamp down on the rave scene which had given birth to Orbital. The other track with Goldfrapp vocals, “Sad But True”, was remixed for the “Times Fly” EP, the band’s only release in 1995.

The single “The Box” was released in April 1996, reaching #11 in the UK, and its parent album “In Sides”, released in May 1996, became their second top five album. It revealed a less obviously dance-oriented sound than previously, and had more in common with soundtrack music. In Sides has since come to be considered one of their most critically well-regarded works. As with the previous album, there was a vague theme of ecological disaster and dissatisfaction with society. The following year, the duo contributed to film soundtracks (The Saint & Event Horizon) and enjoyed the biggest singles of their career, with a live version of Satan and their reworking of the aforementioned “The Saint” theme both reaching #3 in the UK.

1998 saw a return to the studio to work on their fifth album “The Middle of Nowhere”. This was released in 1999, becoming their third top five album, and was a return to a more upbeat style, with Alison Goldfrapp returning on vocals, and included the single “Style” featuring the stylophone. In 2000 the single Beached was released from the soundtrack to the film “The Beach”, mixing the brothers’ musical style with a melody by Angelo Badalamenti and the words of Leonardo DiCaprio from the film.

2001’s “The Altogether” featured guest vocals by the Hartnolls’ brother-in-law David Gray, a sampled Ian Dury, and a version of the “Doctor Who” theme, entitled “Doctor ?”. It was to be their last album for FFRR, and had a mixed critical reception. The following year, “Work 1989-2002” collected various singles from Chime onwards.

Orbital split up in 2004. They played a final series of gigs from June through July 2004 at the “Glastonbury Festival”, the “T in the Park” Festival in Scotland, the “Oxegen” festival (formerly known as “Witness”) in Ireland, and the “Wire Festival” in Japan, concluding with a live “Peel Session” gig at Maida Vale Studios in London on 28 July 2004. The release of their seventh and last original album, the “Blue Album” (which, unlike the untitled previous green and brown albums, was actually named the “Blue Album”), coincided with this final wave of shows. The album featured “Sparks” (on “Acid Pants”) and Lisa Gerrard (on the final single “One Perfect Sunrise”).

Paul Hartnoll continues to record music under his own name, including tracks for the new “Wipeout Pure” game for the PSP. He released his first full length solo album, entitled “The Ideal Condition” on the ACP record label in June 2007. Phil Hartnoll formed a new electronica duo, “Long Range”, with Nick Smith. Their debut album, “Madness and Me”, was released on their own label, Long Range Recordings, on August 6.

In 2008 as “Long Range”, they signed to commercial management company Angel Artists who additionally represent the likes of Dave Ball (of “Soft Cell”), “The Grid”, Paul Dakeyne & “Icehouse Project”. He lives in Brighton with his three sons, Louis, Milo and Conrad.

Orbital released a 2 CD/DVD compilation “Orbital: Live at Glastonbury 1994-2004” on 11 June 2007. The collection contains over 2 hours of music recorded from the group’s performances at the festival over the course of a decade of appearances there.

Orbital sometimes incorporated political and environmental commentary into their music. The track “Forever” on Snivilisation samples a speech by Graham Crowden from the 1982 Lindsay Anderson film Britannia Hospital, in which he lambasts humankind for its destructive ways; and the track “You Lot” on the Blue Album, features a confrontational, partially vocoded anti-genetic engineering sample from Christopher Eccleston, originally from the TV two-part series The Second Coming written by Russell T Davies.

They recorded “The Girl With The Sun In Her Head” from “In Sides” using Greenpeace’s mobile solar power generator CYRUS. They named an early record “Belfast” after playing live in the city of Belfast at the height of The Troubles in 1990. Other album track titles suggest environmental concern such as “Kein Trink Wasser” (“no drinking water” in German) from Snivilisaton and “Dŵr Budr” (“dirty water” in Welsh) and “P.E.T.R.O.L.” from “In Sides”.

Although Orbital has done many live shows, Phil Hartnoll said in an interview, that he only learned to DJ in the last few years. LRR is the music label of Phil Hartnoll (Orbital) and Nick Smith and home to the band, Long Range. www.longrange.tv and www.myspace.com/longrangemusic

Pioneer of British electronic music returns Orbital (aka Phil and Paul Hartnoll) were, for almost two decades, one of the most creative and influential electronic acts on the planet, recording their seventh and last studio album in 2004. Not content to rest on the laurels of past glory, Phil Hartnoll’s new creative project is Long Range, formed in conjunction with Nick Smith, an artist whose recording career for dance labels Dragonfly and Atomic Records has led to major film credits with Ridley Scott. Long Range’s sound harks back to the ambient genius that was Orbital whilst transporting the listener into a more acoustic, atmospheric and cinematic realm. From blissed out moments to jarred and broken beats, their eponymous album references a spectrum of genres and refuses to be pigeonholed.

Orbital reformed in 2009 with the original lineup of Phil Hartnoll and Paul Hartnoll.

The Winstons - Amen Brother

The most famous loop af all times! "Amen Break," a six-second drum sample from the b-side of this chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures.

The Winstons - Amen, Brother ( http://www.myspace.com/amenbros )

Label : (Metromedia Records, BMI)

Biography by Ron Wynn & Bruce Eder :

A Washington, D.C.-based soul act led by Richard Spencer, the Winstons signed to Curtom in early 1968 and lasted there for one single, the rousing "Need a Replacement." They had a sound that was somewhat similar to the Impressions, but were unfortunate enough to have signed with Curtom before the label had national distribution, and the single never got the play it should have. A year after leaving Curtom, they hit for the Metromedia label with a huge single called "Color Him Father," which became a Top Ten R&B and pop hit, just missing number one on the R&B list, and also earned a Grammy for Best R&B Song. It was both a great tribute number and outstanding lead vocal from Richard Spencer, along with Ray Maritano, Quincy Mattison, Phil Tolotta, Sonny Peckrol, and G.C. Coleman. Mattison and Coleman were veterans of Otis Redding's band. The Winstons eventually toured as the backup band for the Impressions, but never again made any noise on the charts.

The Winstons line-up included:

Gregory C. Coleman (vocals, drums)
Ray Maritano (vocals, alto saxophone)
Quincy Mattison (vocals, lead guitar)
Sonny Pekerol (vocals, bass guitar)
Richard Lewis Spencer (lead vocals, tenor saxophone)
Phil Tolotta (second lead, organ)

Tom Trago - Use Me Again

Tom Trago (b. 1983, Amsterdam) has been operating at the forefront of electronic music for the past ten years. Started playing records as a local Amsterdam DJ - and soon abroad - holding down residencies and making underground radio to promote new music, he quickly moved to producing his own sound. Now one of Rushhours prominent producers, Trago debuted in 2006 with his first single Live with the BBQ, which rapidly gained cult status.
Since then he has been remixing various artists such as Franz Ferdinand, Laidback Luke and Philippe Zdar. Other remixes have been released on record labels like Kindred Spirits, Magnetron, Philpot and Rushhour. In addition, his music has been remixed by Aardvarck, Actress and Motor City Drum Ensemble amongst many others.

In 2009 Trago released Voyage Direct, an 8-track EP which envisions his philosophy on Disco and House music. In that same year he was invited to conduct with the Kindred Spirits Ensemble during Amsterdam Dance Event. The Voyage Direct series is now a sublabel of Rushhour, releasing records by Awanto 3, Dexter and Legowelt.
In order to create and share music with like-minded producers, Trago initiated 08Bar, a music platform founded in 2005 to stimulate talent and promote new productions. Collaborations such as Alfabet and Yuro Trago grew from there and now Trago produces several artists locally as well as internationally. Together with Parra he released two edit compilations: Edith Niaf and The Von Small Hausen edits.

March 2011 will see the coming of his first full length solo album entitled Iris. It features collaborations with great artists such as Tyree Cooper, Oliver Daysoul, Ommas Keith and Romanthony.

Tom Trago has held down residencies in Amsterdam (Jimmy Woo/Melkweg/Paradiso) and as part of Parra Soundsystem in Bern (Club Bonsoir/Wasserwerk) and Paris (Le Paris Paris/Regine). He has been invited to play in cities like Berlin, London, Los Angeles and Sydney and promises to continue.

In February 2011 the first album-single will be released. This summer will include a tour to promote his new album Iris, new Alfabet releases, remixes and other collaborations are coming up, and stay tuned to his Voyage Direct Radio show at Red Light Radio.

Shenoda - Shots

Info:

An infectous groover Ep that caught our ears recently. Doesn't seem like much at first, but it just keeps building impressions after each spin. Proper club design, we like ;)

Crazy P - Sun Science

Crazy Penis started out as a duo made up of jim baron and chris todd. they met at nottingham university where they were studying to further themselves, or rather, sitting around smoking fags and trying to make records. they did make a record called "digging deeper" and it was released on the musica vitae label, which was run by a friend of jims. the track got excellent reviews from the likes of ashley beedle, the murk boys and laurent garnier which encouraged jim and chris to continue with their compositions and begin looking further afield to a successful recording career.
